Year over year, the statistics are staggering. Most people (66% in the U.S. and over 80% globally) are disengaged or highly disengaged at work. We can translate this disengagement to boredom or misery or worse!
 
For companies, the costs of employees being unhappy at work are heavy and equates to billions of dollars in lost productivity. For the people who are disengaged and not happy at work, this is nothing short of life stifling. Most of us spend more than half of our waking hours working or doing work-related activities. That we are anything less than fulfilled is cheating ourselves out of the best times of our lives. If you constantly say, “I am so unhappy at work,” there are solutions. In fact, there is a simple strategy and accompanying framework that can get you out of the doldrums and into the career you’ve always wanted.

STRATEGY

Many factors feed into the high levels of people being unhappy at work, but the most critical is a flawed strategic approach to career design.

 

How most of us think about our careers could be called a “building block” or a “logic-ing” strategy. We go to school. We study something that we have some interest in. We have an internship or two. Then, it is time to get a job. We scan the market and ask ourselves what we can logically do with the knowledge and experience we have. We lock in on a solution, and we work without ever taking into consideration that we may be unhappy at work. As years pass, we amass more skills and experiences and we ask ourselves what we can logically do with the new knowledge and abilities. We scan the market, lock in on a logical solution, and repeat the cycle. The problem with this strategy is that if you are like most and decided about your career early on that weren’t particularly good or are no longer in line with your values, all you’re doing is compounding bad decisions on top of bad decisions. By never thinking about your passions or what you love to do, you’re dooming
yourself to be perpetually unhappy at work.

A much more effective strategy is planting your flag. This requires taking a few steps back and asking some critical questions including, “How do I want to be in the world?” “What do I want to create?” “How do I want to use my life?” “What kind of impact do I want to have?” You also need to look at what drives you. When you have a true purpose behind your decisions, you can align them with your values and ensure that you are always moving in a direction that will fulfill you.
You then design these items out by hand, in Power-point or on whiteboards and then align your skills, resources and talents behind creating THIS destination.

FRAMEWORK

 
How do you build what you’ve designed and how do you use this to ensure you will never be unhappy at work?
The three-part moonshot strategy to creating a fulfilling career is the same every single time you embark on the journey. It works whether you’d like a promotion at your current job, would like to do the same thing at a different company down the road or if you want to quit investment banking and go sell baskets in the rainforest. Basically, we can re-design it to fit any purpose, and it’s the perfect solution to being not happy at work.
 
 

COMMITMENT

Truly committing to creating a more fulfilling career is the crucial first step. Commitment can come proactively by listening to that quiet voice in your head that asks, “Is this all there is? Could there be something more?” Once you’ve identified your purpose and drive these decisions, usually come much easier. If your current job does not align with your values, you’ll always be unhappy at work. Identifying this as the reason will help you commit to something new. This happened when I quit the corporate world just over five years ago. I knew that there was something else waiting for me and that my feelings of “I am so unhappy at work” did not need to continue. To increase commitment, I explored both what I, the world and my family would gain by me creating this change and what I would lose out on if I didn’t make the move. People are motivated by either pain or pleasure. Putting the two together can be a powerful commitment strengthener. A lay-off, downsizing, a firing or a family move can also force commitment. Either way, commitment is the first critical piece.

CREATE

 
Once one has committed to making a change, then comes the real fun – getting into action and creating a new career based on your values that drive you.This is when you can truly start feeling the possibility of never being unhappy at work again. The first component of this is self-discovery. More than knowing the “what” one wants to build, it is understanding the “why.” A great place to begin to clarify the things we value most is the design of your moonshot. Are you looking for adventure, freedom, security, teamwork or impact?
 
Creating an extraordinary life means doing it on your terms and no one else’s. What does your design tell you? These values are then used as filters to rank potential new opportunities and ensure your new career is in line with your values. Next comes community building. We reach out to people, whether we know them directly or not, who can help us gather the information and insights we need to determine if a potential career path is aligned with the things we value most.
Then comes the part of creating a fulfilling career that people usually don’t like to talk about. These are the fears we have about stepping into the unknown and the assumptions we have about what is or isn’t possible. Assumptions, which are all rooted in fear, probably play the biggest role in keeping us from the career we want to have. Assumptions are the precursors to those limiting beliefs that kept us unhappy at work for all those years. I’m too young. I’m too old. I’ve never done it before. I don’t know the right people. I don’t have access to capital.
 

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

The thing about assumptions is that they are either wholly untrue or simply parameters that we need to consider in building our next steps. One of the big assumptions I hear goes something like, “I couldn’t leave this job. I have a mortgage to pay (or kids’ education to pay for… or both).” Do you really believe that being unhappy at work is worth the paycheck? Or are you willing to take a risk to have it all?
Is the job you have today the only job in the world that pays whatever you’re earning or more? We often assume a false dichotomy – either I will be happy and living in a park on hopes and dreams OR I will be unhappy at work but financially secure. There are infinite ways to create anything, including happiness and financial security (or freedom). In this scenario, you simply define your minimum workable number and know that you won’t make a leap for any less than what will give you the financial security and freedom you want.
Finally, there are the tactical components of creating a new opportunity – the community building conversations, résumé and LinkedIn profiles. Google can be a great source for the “how to” on tactics. With that said, the most important distinction to help you frame your tactics is understanding the importance of telling the story of who you are becoming and not who you were before. If you continue to act as the person you were before, you will almost guarantee that you will remain unhappy at work no matter what new career you choose.
 
I worked with a successful entrepreneur who was having trouble getting the funding and partnerships she was looking for. When I asked her to tell me about herself, she shared what a great school she had attended, how she was the youngest person to achieve as much as she had in her prior job and the many accolades she had won. She mentioned nothing about the company she was now running or the powerful impact and potential financial return of the new endeavor. As soon as she flipped her story, her success skyrocketed.
 
 

CONTRIBUTE

Once you’ve created the next new and fulfilling career move for yourself, there is one more critical step, which is to contribute. No good story ends when the hero or heroine wins the war or slays the dragon. It ends when the protagonist goes back to the community to share the bounty of what they’ve won. This is what will truly ensure that being not happy at work will never be part of your new endeavor and that your career will be full of purpose and meaning. So, in this case, ask yourself how and to whom you can contribute. Can you mentor someone is on a similar journey to help them shorten their path? Can you provide critical insights and information to others who are looking to enter your industry? How can you strengthen the community that helped you create the opportunity you now have?
Once you have committed, created, and contributed, you have truly created a dream career and will never again utter the phrase “I am so unhappy at work.”

Have you ever been so afraid you couldn’t move? Have you ever felt this sense of fear or panic, even when you know it’s not rational? Extreme fear makes us freeze, but what happens when that fear never goes away? For people who are anxious, scared or fearful, everyday tasks can feel impossible to handle.   Everyone experiences anxiety in their lives. The difference is in how we react to it. Some people, it may be speaking in public or pushing the speed limit, which brings about feelings of crippling fear. For others, that kind of anxiety is exhilarating. It’s the way we deal with the anxiety and fear that makes a world of difference.

 
 

WHAT CAUSES ANXIETY?

 
Broadly, anxiety is a person’s excessive, persistent fear or worry in non-threatening situations. Anxiety can come from specific triggers, for instance, needing to ride in an airplane or speak in public, or manifest in generalized fear and worry about small, every day triggers going on around them. The causes of anxiety aren’t always clear, and they can differ from person to person.
 
Remember, everyone experiences anxiety at different times and in different situations. But if it’s preventing you from achieving your goals and living the life you want, it’s time to make a change and find anxiety help.

How To Treat Anxiety?

 
Use your fear before it uses you.
 
One of the best ways to learn how to deal with anxiety is to understand how to use its fear for motivation. It’s not that successful people are never afraid;It’s that they are more afraid of not living a full, rich life than they are of whatever else might hold them back. Instead of being crippled by fear and anxiety, they use that fear pushing them further toward their goals. Here are 5 tips I used to thrive through times of anguish.
 

1. Visualization

visualizing Take a moment and visualize yourself at an old age. You’re relaxing, reflecting on the life you lived. Now, imagine your life as if you did everything you wanted to do, but it is that always made you feel anxious or afraid; maybe it’s changing careers, getting married or taking a trip somewhere you’ve never been. How do you feel? What’s your life been like as a result?   Now, continue with this mental image, but now examine how your life looks without achieving those things, because of what makes you feel anxious or afraid. This is the path where your fears dominate you. Do you look back and feel you missed out? Do you have any regrets? Wish you’d made different choices?  

Compare the feelings from both possibilities and use that emotion to make your choice. After this exercise, you’ll feel the conviction in your decision.

 

2. Become Fearful

 
When your mind fills with fear, it prevents you from doing anything. Make the decision that there is much more fear in doing nothing than the fear itself. Be afraid of not living the life you know you deserve and worked hard for. Don’t let fear hold you back. Let fear be the prime motivator that pushes you to your full potential, achieving all the things in life that you really want. This may be a challenge at first, but once you push past these fears and be more fearful of not becoming a success in life, not making your loved one’s proud, but most importantly not letting yourself down. Once you realize that these fears are way worse than the imagined ones, you’ll be driven to take action.
 

 

3. Incantations

 
Anxiety is a feeling that everyone has experienced and it is normal. Feelings or emotions is energy in motion, so use that to push yourself forwards, not backwards. Progress equals happiness not perfection. If everyone had to feel amazing to be productive, I don’t think any of us would be. Unlike affirmations, incantations is something said outloud, using your whole physiology. (Language, Focus, physiology) Give it emotion by putting meaning behind the words you so carefully choose. We may never know how to treat anxiety completely, but we can develop tools and skills to get past those moments of fear and anxiety. When you train your brain to accept that even though you may be feeling some type of way, you can still push forward. That is a luxury most people don’t have.
 
That negative self talk in your head about anxiety is a limitation, a limitation preventing you from accomplishing your dreams. Are you going to let your mind control your life or are you motivated now to push yourself and relate the feelings of anxiety to action? Most likely you are anxious about something that hasn’t happened yet and most likely will never occur the way you think it will. If you’re focused on the past, depressed thoughts come in. I heard a saying once a long time ago, kinda stuck with me.
“If You have one leg in the future and one leg in the past, you are pissing on the present.”

4. Physiology

 
If I were to tell you to describe how a depressed person would look like, their breathing, their posture, what they are focusing on. I am sure you would all agree on the responses. Now for those who get anxiety, what are you going through at those times? Are you sweating? Difficulty breathing? These all affect your physical being, It’s your state of mind. So how do you combat this you ask? Change your physiology, stand up straight, smile, or just get up and move. Start dancing. By changing your physical state it will change how you feel. Remember about focus and energy, shift your focus and watch your internal and external dialogue that you tell yourself. The language you use will affect your emotional state.

5. Tag It And Bag It

Remember, these emotions are never just going to go away completely. It’s how we deal with them is what needs to change. Stressful moments happen in life and I am not saying you can’t react or have these feelings, just don’t dwell in them. 
I love to play golf, but sometimes I hit a bad shot and let it get into my head. It takes me two holes just to get back in the game. Tiger Woods, for instance, when he hits a bad shot, he allows himself 60-90 seconds to get emotional about what just happened, but It’s what he does after those 90 seconds that really makes a difference. He moves on. I started using this method first on the golf course, instead of one bad shot turning into two holes of bad shots, by the time I got to my ball “I tagged it and bagged it”. Never brought it back into my mind, just went back on focusing on my current objective.
The same goes with anxiety, self-pity, any emotion or feeling we get. We have to move forward. How many times has life happened and put you in a mood, and while in that mood, how many good decisions did you make? My guess is few. Our state of mind can affect the way we make decisions. So, feel it, embrace it, then tag it, bag it and never look back.
 
If you are someone who struggles with these feelings more frequently than others, don’t beat yourself up. We all handle anxiety at some point in our lives. This is not a reason to give up; you have the control, the drive, everything you need to be successful.

WHAT’S YOUR MORNING RITUAL?

 

Does it really matter what you do every morning? A ritual? Believe it or not a high percentage of people wake up already thinking about the stress that lies ahead. However, a positive incantation can be just the thing you need to get pumped and ready to take the day head on!

Those who have claimed to have an effective ritual say it really sets the tone of the day. Giving them a better outlook and approach. For those who have not adopted a morning ritual, many say it is a hit or miss. “They” like to say I woke up on the wrong side of the bed or Vice Versa. On those days of “waking up on the wrong side”, this mood is likely to carry on throughout the rest of your day, sometimes not able to snap out of it at all.

MAPPING OUT YOUR MORNING

The Huffington Post published an article on morning rituals that help you create a better day and ultimately a better life. The author places particular emphasis on the benefits of visualization and how Tony Robbins takes it to the next level by adding positive incantations. That’s right, not affirmations – incantations*.

Through Tony Robbins and his team is where I was first introduced and taught how to make and perform a proper incantation.I know, when I was first heard about this I had no clue what to think. I asked him, “So, I just look in the mirror and say I am beautiful over and over again?”, we laughed, but again I was confusing affirmations with Incantations. It is that and much more. Without jumping too much into our physiology or psychology. The bottom line is that we have the power to control and change how we feel. How we feel can change the outcomes and choices we partake in at home or in the office.

First, let me explain the difference between an affirmation and an incantation. An affirmation is a spoken word of encouragement, but for some people it just isn’t enough to be an effective technique. For those who really want to get in the “zone” for their day, just saying an affirmation will not cut it. Yes, reciting something that is uplifting may scratch the surface, but with an incantation, you are truly feeling the meaning of what you are saying by using your whole physiology. That is way more empowering. Not only are you speaking these words, you are using your body and your voice to bring them to life.

Start each morning with a ritual to set yourself up for success.

“Growth Happens When You Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone”

Incantations really come in handy not only as part of a morning ritual. We all have times when we are just not in the mood, but have a commitment or sales call where we must be in the “zone”.  Need help writing an incantation? Inquire within and we will be happy to assist.

10 minutes daily should be the bare minimum. Make a commitment to yourself, leave a comment below to solidify the deal. Embarrassed that others may hear you? Judge you? Successful people do what others won’t do now, so they can do whatever they want later. Throw some music on while you’re getting ready, take a walk or in your car on your way to work. My kids think it’s fun, so there is no excuses.

The first two weeks, you will notice yourself repeating it over and over in your head, before bed . After 4 weeks, other people will notice something different, a change. A confidence or just a feeling when you walk into a room. An “I’ll have whatever he/she is having” feeling. This will be the same for you, the words you say will have meaning as you start believing.

POWERFUL TRANSFORMATIONS

The key to incantations is how you are changing your whole physiology, your state of mind, and your focus. Bringing a positive outlook to everyday. There is nothing wrong with affirmations, they sound positive and are, they just lack power when not said out loud, with meaning and emotions behind them. An effective incantation truly hits the mind, body and spirit to alter one’s way of thinking, feeling and believing.

Maybe at first you don’t 100% believe what you are saying. Another voice in your head is saying “but I am not confident”. Keep pushing through these barriers we call limiting beliefs and not only will this change your morning, it could change your whole outlook on life and yourself. Remember, the mind has no eyes. It believes what you say to it, internally, externally and your senses. Studies on the brain have been done with piano players and Olympic athletes in which visualizing, the act of the performance had the same effect on the brain as preforming the task.

For those of you who like to work out, well guys at least, want to go heavier and heavier, adding up how much weight they just benched, bragging to their friends, but the weight doesn’t matter if your form is terrible. Someone who uses less weight with proper form would have more effective results. Why, because your brain cannot read the numbers on the weights.

The resources and tools for success are there for those who are resourceful enough to not just find them but adopt them into your life. Adding Incantations to your morning ritual will serve as a powerful reminder. Every day getting that confidence boost, you need to start each day as the man or woman you choose to be. It is a commitment to living your life with an energy so positive other people feel it. Tapping into the inner confidence buried inside yourself.

 

 

MORNING RITUALS: DAILY ROUTINE

Incantations allows you to take the wheel of your mind by choosing how you want to feel when you want to feel it. Change the quality of your life no matter what circumstances you may be in. Be strong, don’t let external forces control the way you feel. Don’t allow a limiting belief to stop you from living your dream life. Mental and emotional control can be a factor of how you look at your life and make key decisions.

This influences the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, what we’re capable of or what’s achievable or not. The states we go into most often will determine whether we find the strategies necessary to succeed and whether we come up with a story that will empower us. Knowing you have this massive power to change your life, what are you going to do with it?

MAKING ROOM FOR CHANGE

It is vital to manage your time efficiently. A morning ritual means you need to allow yourself the uninterrupted time to visualize and reflect. If you live in a house like mine, morning times can be hectic, rushing to get kids ready for school or camp while getting yourself ready for work. Rushing an incantation will just diminish its power. Maybe you have to get up a little earlier to have a comfortable, stress free environment to focus. There is a reason every successful person I have spoken to has a morning ritual. I guess the question to ask your-self is it worth it?

If anyone told you changing your life is a walk in the park, it’s because they haven’t had to change theirs. From finding time to add in a morning ritual or making other necessary positive changes in your life, it can be challenging. This is where a Life Coach could be beneficial. What Motivates You to Take Action?

Power of state: the role of a positive state of mind

When was the last time you smiled, not because you felt like it, but just for the sake of smiling? You’d probably do it more often if you knew that smiling was making you happier. That’s right! If you made all the facial expressions you make when you’re excited, elated and thrilled, even when you don’t actually feel those emotions, the truth is that you’d see an immediate improvement in your mood. Why does this matter? Because your mood is everything, especially when it comes to accomplishing your goals.

In fact, take a moment to smile right now. Why does something as simple as a grin have so much power to dictate what motivates you? How do you feel, physically and emotionally, when you allow yourself to smile?

Your mind interprets the events we experience within the framework you set for yourself, meaning that whether an experience is positive or negative is largely determined by our mood and state of mind. Think about it: the emotion and meaning our minds attach to events ultimately counts more than the experiences themselves, since they condition our willingness to experience and pursue them.

Examining your mood

A positive state of mind can be what motivates you in life, and a negative state of mind can be what holds you back.

It affects your mood by two different things: your physiology and your energy. What does it mean to say that your physiology can determine your mood? Consider the signs and vibes that a motivated person radiates. They smile, laugh, and they more often than not shine with unbridled optimism. They often have better posture and more approachable body language than someone who’s not as motivated. It’s true that certain goals and experiences cause these reactions, but this is only half the truth. Being happy, open to change and optimistic also work the other way, making you predisposed to positively evaluating the task at hand, your life and what the future brings if you accomplish your objectives. This can help you get motivated and discover what drives you.

Evaluating Your Energy Levels

Energy levels can affect the mood, too. It’s important to eat right, exercise, and take great care of yourself. Think about it: How can we expect our minds and bodies to tackle our responsibilities and ambitions when we starve them of nutrients and TLC? When you make the commitment to maintain your energy levels through natural means, like healthy eating and exercise, you’ll find that your state of mind will improve.

Good energy levels, got it–but how do you maintain them? Treating your body and mind right via exercise and diet plays a big part in finding out how to stay motivated. Another factor is breathing correctly. You’d be surprised how much of your energy comes down to breathing and to giving yourself enough time to reflect through morning meditation. If you really are serious about restoring that passion, that motivation, to succeed — not just professionally, but within all aspects of your life.

The three levels of beliefs

“Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.” – Tony Robbins

Our beliefs have varying levels of emotional intensity and they possess the power to change our actions. We can pinpoint at least three categories of beliefs based on their ability to influence action in you. Understanding each of the three categories will empower you to create healthy and positive changes in your life by beginning to adjust your beliefs.

1. Opinions are something we feel relatively certain about, but the certainty is only temporary and those can change easily. For example, you might think the head of your company’s accounting department is not qualified for his position, but your opinion may change quickly when you see how effectively he manages his staff.

2. Beliefs are formed when you develop a much larger base of reference, one that’s often associated with strong emotions and based on experience. Beliefs can create such a level of certainty that they close people off to new ideas. For example, some people believe that money equals success. Other people may have a different — yet equally passionate — beliefs abut what success truly means.

3. A conviction, however, eclipses a belief, primarily because of the emotional intensity a person links to the idea. A person holding a conviction feels so certain that he or she will be resistant to new input, often to the point of obsession.
